Time Machine by Olivia Artz Modular — A Granular Journey Through Time
Olivia Artz Modular's Time Machine is a granular delay that treats time like a malleable substance. Eight faders stand at your ready on its panel, each controlling an independent delay line. There’s also the one fader for the dry signal, however - this is where familiar territory ends and the exploration of time begins. Digital feedback rarely sounds like this…!
The brain behind this temporal sculptor is a high-resolution DSP engine crafted by Eris Fairbanks, drawing from 15 years of granular programming expertise. Its main time control bends exponentially, giving you precise command over shorter delays while still allowing for vast time stretches. A single knob sweeps from near-zero to 8 seconds, but feed it some CV and watch it expand to an impressive 2.5 minutes.
The spread parameter is where Time Machine reveals its unique character. At center, your eight delay streams space themselves evenly in time. Turn left, and they huddle closer to the present moment. Turn right, and they scatter towards the maximum delay time like digital echoes drifting into the future. Patch in a clock signal and these streams lock to tempo, though adjusting the spread sends them wandering from the beat - all except the final tap, which stays faithfully synchronized.
From rhythmic patterns to reverberant spaces, from granular textures to feedback experiments, Time Machine crafts its delays with precision. It's equally comfortable working with ultra-short Karplus-Strong territory as it is with long, evolving soundscapes that seem to stretch towards infinity. This is a curious delay-journey worth experiencing...!
