Drum synthesizers are specialized synthesizers focused on creating percussive sounds. They emerged in the late 60s and 70s, with early pioneers like the Rhythmicon and the Roland TR series defining these electronic drums. Drum machines revolutionized music production by allowing musicians to generate and manipulate rhythms electronically, paving the way for genres like hip-hop and techno. Although drums are their specialty, they often allow for much more. For example, the Roland TR-808 has been used to create iconic basslines and leads. There are devices that come with or without sequencers, while some may produce a single sound and others feature an entire drum kit. Often, analog circuits are combined with digital capabilities and samples.
