Serge NEW GATES / VCFX 2023 — Dual Function Sound Sculptor
Serge Tcherepnin revisited his classic Gates design from 1973 and has now created something special for the Eurorack world. The NEW GATES / VCFX 2023 is a dual function module that elegantly combines two essential synthesis tools.
The GATES section delivers three distinct personalities through a single switch. DC/Linear mode provides transparent amplification ideal for control voltage processing. AC/LOG offers musically responsive exponential curves that breathe life into audio signals. The MOD position transforms the circuit into a ring modulator, twisting waveforms into new territories. What's remarkable is how these modes intentionally overlap—signals fed into multiple CV inputs create unexpected interactions that shift dramatically with knob adjustments, inviting exploration beyond the traditional boundaries.
Complementing the GATES, the VCFX delivers a specialized filter section centered around resonant bandpass filtering, combined with a 12dB lowpass output. Both cutoff and resonance respond immediately to voltage control, while the dedicated gain stage balances input energy against feedback intensity. The serge style color-coding (white paths for DC, black for AC) should make patching easy to grasp.
Not only nostalgia—but also evolution. Serge has refined these circuits for contemporary modular applications while preserving their distinctive character.
