Warp 1 by Joranalogue — Lab-Grade Waveshaper and much more
Waveshapers typically rely on the inherent characteristics of transistors and diodes to add color and grit. Joranalogue's Warp 1 takes a different approach — instead, this module implements a precise mathematical power function to bend waveforms into concave or convex curves.
Warp 1 revolves around two primary controls: Exponent and Scale. The Exponent knob determines the degree of curvature applied to incoming signals. Turn it left and waveforms become thin and hollow, resembling crossover distortion. Turn it right and you'll hear soft clipping overdrive building, which causes the signal’s tops to be flattened, to the point where it starts to resemble a square wave. The Scale parameter controls the depth of this shaping action, determining where the input and output voltages intersect regardless of the exponent setting.
Onwards — a Direct/Hyper switch reveals the module's darker capabilities. In Direct mode, the exponent stays positive, offering a clear progression from subtle to driven timbres. Flip to Hyper mode and the exponent goes negative, creating hyperbolic curves with extreme output swings as signals cross zero. Here, clipping becomes inevitable and the results range from aggressive to downright violent.
Speaking of clipping — Warp 1 features a precision clipper with independent control over positive and negative boundaries. Combined with the Absolute Value switch, you can use this module as a half or full-wave rectifier. Feed a triangle wave through with Absolute Value enabled and you'll get an instant octave-up effect. This makes Warp 1 equally useful for CV limiting and audio processing. The dual summed inputs remove the need for external mixers in many patches, and both regular and inverted outputs give you routing flexibility. A polarity comparator gate output extracts gate signals based on input polarity — handy for deriving rhythmic pulses from audio-rate modulation or creating square waves from other sources.
Joranalogue's attention to detail shows throughout. The module operates DC-coupled from subsonic to supersonic frequencies. LEDs provide real-time visual feedback for input, output, and clipping status. CV inputs allow external modulation of exponent, scale, and clipping levels. The Symmetry knob adds manual DC offset for asymmetric waveshaping or compensating for DC-biased input signals.
Warp 1 slots comfortably between gentle timbral enhancement and extreme distortion. Whether you're adding subtle harmonic movement to clean VCO outputs or pushing sounds into hyperbolic territory, the module maintains musical control through its well-chosen parameter ranges and clear interface. Those familiar with Joranalogue's lab-grade approach will recognize the precision here, every control does exactly what you'd expect, with meaningful results across its entire range. One thing is certain — this is a very special waveshaper!
