Holocene Electronics Non-Linear Memory Machine — Stereo Buffer Delay with Time-Stretching, Freeze, Pitch Shifting and Glitchy Reverbs
The Non-Linear Memory Machine (NLMM) is a stereo audio buffer processor for stretching, freezing and rearranging sound in time. With buffer lengths ranging from 20 milliseconds to 15 seconds, it moves from unusual phasing and smeared, glitchy reverbs to long delays and Frippertronics-style looping, in other words, quite a range for this type of module.
Unlike conventional tape or BBD delays, modulating the Time/Scrub control doesn't cause the pitch to drift. Instead, a custom algorithm compresses and expands time, while the Smear control adds random movement to the playback position, diffusing the sound further. Hit Freeze to capture the buffer and scrub through it manually, or use the Pitch control to shift things up or down an octave, complete with crunchy digital aliasing. With CV control over all six main parameters, there's plenty of room for modulation and happy accidents. This is a really interesting hands-on delay with a useful disregard for neat repetitions.
Features:
- Stereo digital audio buffer processor
- Delay, time-stretching, pitch shifting, freeze and looping
- Three buffer ranges: Short (20–320 ms), Medium (320 ms–1.6 s), Long (1.45–15 s)
- Custom time-stretching algorithm without conventional delay-time pitch drift
- Time/Scrub control for delay time or playback position when frozen
- Smear control randomises playback position for diffuse, glitchy textures
- Pitch shifting ±1 octave, with musical interval markings
- Freeze function for capturing and scrubbing audio
- Adjustable feedback for extended delays and accumulating loops
- Dry/Wet mix control
- Dedicated CV inputs for Time/Scrub, Smear, Pitch, Dry/Wet, Feedback and Freeze
- Stereo inputs and outputs
- 22.05 kHz sampling rate
- 32-bit processor with 24-bit custom DSP hardware
