Want a crisp stereo compressor? - WMD's MSCL may only be four HP wide, but it still leaves many a studio powerhouse behind in terms of sound quality.
The MSCL was primarily designed as a dynamics tool for subgroups and busses, but it also does an excellent job when used with individual signals. Similar to classic DBX heavyweights, various parameters are grouped together and adjusted by a single knob. The ratio (1.25:1 to infinity), the make-up gain and the threshold can be adjusted together with only one knob. The latter parameter operates in the opposite direction to the other control variables. Further parameters, e.g. for attack and release times, are used for fine adjustment.
In addition, there is a threshold switch that switches between three value ranges (-15 dBu, -4 dBu, +5 dBu). Another switch makes it possible to restrict the gain control range by 3 dB or 9 dB. As a result, the circuit then behaves more like a peak limiter. The attack (0.15 ms/dB to 0.1 s/dB) and release (0.6 ms/dB to 4s/dB) controls make the compressor's transient phase and decay adjustable.
The MSCL is equally suited for subtle as well as powerful compression effects. In addition to modular signals, other audio material can also be processed. A gain section at the output allows volume adjustments of up to 35 dB. Thanks to a switchable sidechain channel, the MSCL's control path can be controlled by external signals to create ducking effects.
