The SSL Bus Compressor has been gluing mixes together since the 4000B console arrived in 1976. THE BUS+ takes that same circuit topology — built around THAT 2181 VCAs — and expands it into a standalone 19" unit with features that would be impossible to fit into a console centre section. The core sound remains faithful to the original: that punchy, cohesive character that makes a mix feel like a record. Everything else is new territory.

Three coloration modes let you dial in different compression flavors. LOW THD cleans up low-frequency distortion for tighter bottom end. F/B (feedback) mode takes the sidechain signal post-VCA for a more relaxed, program-dependent response. 4K MODE switches to single-ended VCA operation with variable harmonic distortion — the grittier character of early 4000-series consoles, adjustable to taste. These modes can be combined, and paired with the four operating modes (Classic Stereo, Summed Sidechain Stereo, Dual Mono, Mid-Side), the range of compression behaviors is substantial.

The D-EQ is a genuine surprise: a 2-band analog dynamic equalizer, something rarely found outside the plugin world. Each band can compress or expand, with 16 selectable frequency points and adjustable range. Place it before or after the compressor in the signal path. A Transient Expander, mix control for parallel compression, and negative ratios for creative pumping effects round out the processing options. All pots are stepped and read by a microcontroller, meaning recall is precise and repeatable — a detail that matters for mastering work. +27.5 dBu of headroom ensures it integrates cleanly with professional studio levels.

A serious tool for mix bus, stems, drums, or mastering — with enough flexibility to cover clean and surgical or saturated and aggressive, depending on what the material needs.
