SSL Bus Comp Classic — Analog Stereo Bus Compressor with Variable VCA Drive and External Sidechain
The legendary SSL bus compressor returns in a focused 1U format, retaining its familiar punch and glue while adding variable harmonic saturation for a good deal more character when you want it.
Built around high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs and SSL's classic sidechain architecture, Bus Comp Classic brings that recognisable sense of cohesion to complete mixes, drum buses and individual stems. The stepped Ratio, Attack and Release controls make settings easy to recall, while the programme-dependent Auto Release and sidechain high-pass filter help keep compression musical without letting heavy bass dominate the response. The interesting new addition is Variable VCA Drive: with the circuit switched out, you get the cleaner, low-distortion character of SSL's SuperAnalog designs. Engage it, and you can gradually introduce the harmonics and grit associated with classic 4000 Series consoles, all the way up to a rather aggressive 10% THD. There's also a genuine stereo external sidechain input, handy for ducking or processing individual stems against the dynamics of a finished mix. Classic SSL compression, with a few very welcome extras!
