Neykia Circuits' Root Locus - Serge-Inspired Multimode Filter Enhanced With Modern Extras.
Nekyia Circuits' Root Locus is an analog 12dB multimode filter based on the CGS512 VCFQ (a variation on the Serge Voltage Variable Q VCF module (VCFQ). Nekyia's own take on this design adds smart features like a dual input crossfader and variable mode output that sweeps between filter responses under CV control.
The module shines in multiple roles. As a standard filter, it offers lowpass, bandpass, notch, and highpass outputs. Push the gain past noon and you'll get warm saturation, especially noticeable through the variable output. The Ping input creates snappy percussion without external audio - just dial up the resonance and let it rip.
Root Locus gets interesting when you start experimenting. Feed the outputs back to the inputs and it becomes a stable sine oscillator with V/oct tracking. Flip the Sub Range switch and suddenly it's processing control voltages or working as a quadrature LFO, with each filter output providing different phases and shapes. You can also patch the filter outputs to freq CV and mode CV inputs to explore rich feedback and waveshaping possibilities, a nod to the concept of patch programmability — a leading aspect in all Serge designs.
The beauty lies in how these elements work together - from subtle filtering to wild feedback patches, Root Locus encourages exploration while remaining musical throughout. Its name, borrowed from control systems theory where it describes how systems change their behavior, feels particularly apt for a filter that so elegantly traces paths between different sonic states.
