Samples II is a surprisingly versatile 5-channel sample player that is fed via a USB stick and therefore offers a huge sample memory and easy-to-use sample management
Don't be fooled by the simple user interface and first impression of Samples II, there are some very interesting ideas hidden inside. The module was primarily designed to play back samples with low latency (0.15 ms) and is therefore perfectly capable of providing your setup with drum samples. But it can do much more than that. Another priority was user-friendliness in terms of file formats. Thus, the module is able to convert any wave file shorter than 30 seconds into the correct format (wave file auto-converter, 16 bit/44.1 kHz). Longer files need to be edited on the computer and can be more than an hour long! With a simple folder system on the USB stick, different sample sets can be loaded using the button.
You may have noticed that there are no CV inputs, but you can still modulate the playback speed of samples 1 and 3 by using trigger inputs 2 and 4 as modulation inputs (via LFO: 100Hz is approximately the original speed). Clever!
This function was already unexpected, but there's more: multi-sample modes! There are different multi-sample modes (random/alphabetical order). The idea behind them is the same. Every time you trigger a channel, different samples are selected. For example, you can play several samples of the same instrument to get a more natural sound experience. Another possibility would be to trigger a variety of random sounds to get particularly wild results.
There is a lot more to learn about the module, so you should watch the video below and take a look at the manual.
- 5-channel sample player with USB-storage and many hidden features
- 5 input jacks to trigger the sounds with +5V signals.
- 5 output jacks for the audio outputs ~8Vpp
- DACs on the module run at 16bits/44.1khz
- stereo files through pair of outputs OR only the left channel only to a single output
- attenuation/mixing system is available
- different playback modes
- playback modes and other options can be changed in a settings text file that is automatically generated by the module and saved in the root of the USB memory stick
