The epic evolution of the legendary Maths module! Polimaths is an 8-channel CV and signal generator from Make Noise
The original Maths is undoubtedly one of the most famous and widely used Eurorack modules ever. Roughly speaking, it is a function generator with two channels and several functions for processing voltages. Polimaths takes this concept and runs with it, but has little to do with the original design – it focuses on generating signals and leaves the processing to other modules in your system.
Polimaths is the third module from the New Universal Synthesizer System (NUSS) and is designed in line with the concept of ‘doing a lot with a little’. The module delivers a whopping 8 digitally calculated voltages at its outputs, making it the ultimate mega modulator module. There are a whole bunch of parameters for controlling the output signals. Not every channel has separate rise and fall controls. Rather, there are common parameters that control all channels more or less simultaneously. Using various approaches, it is basically possible to control each output individually and precisely, but trial and error and experimentation work just as well, of course.
The Polimath's OSC mode is particularly interesting and worth mentioning. It is a variable-shape LFO whose waveform is controlled by the set rise and fall times. This creates eight complex modulations or, at audio speed, eight tones that can even be played via V/octave! In combination with two QXGs, this creates a powerful eight-voice synthesiser.
Polimaths is one of those modules that, in the hands of creative minds, will take on a life of its own and constantly surprise you with new possibilities, just like its predecessor. Very exciting!
