Persephone is versatile VCA with a zero-crossing detector and a discrete JFET as the gain element for overdrive and distortion effects.
The inbuilt zero-crossing detector restricts gain changes to zeros in the audio waveform, preventing clicks and pops that can occur with fast envelopes, especially on lower pitched sounds. This feature is very effective in giving you a persistent and controllable attack sound. With normal VCAs you can get pretty loud clicks when the waveform coming from your oscillator is at a high amplitude while the VCA opens quickly – this can sound different every time you open the VCA. With Persephone you get rid of these unwanted clicks and pops – with the zero-crossing circuit engaged, you can even use a simple gate as the CV input without clicks.
So now you have a very clean attack. With the JFET part of the circuit you can then introduce a good amount of saturation and distortion to your sound source. Did I say this VCA is versatile? Now you know, it is.
The module's signal and CV paths are 100% analogue (there is a little discrete logic involved in the zero-cross circuitry).
