Every Soviet kolkhoz owned a Formanta Polivoks — and among artists like Thomas P. Heckmann or Hainbach, the synthesizer remains highly regarded to this day. Elta Music's Polyvox PF3 takes the original UD1208 filter chip and reinterprets it as a dual multimode desktop unit — now in its MKII iteration, and also available in more colors. Two independent 12dB/octave channels give you lowpass, bandpass, highpass and notch modes each. Use them separately for two sources, link them for stereo, or run them in series for a combined 24dB slope. A Hard/Soft switch toggles between the original Polivoks bite and a slightly tamer response — the difference is most noticeable at high resonance.
Each channel has its own frequency, resonance, level, and dry/wet controls. CV inputs on both cutoffs let you bring in modulation from your system, and the Link switches allow a single knob to drive both filters at once. An onboard noise generator — pink and white, with level and balance controls — sits before the filters and can be blended between the two channels. No external input needed to get sounds out of this thing.
One charming detail: the UD1208 chips are notoriously inconsistent, so no two will measure exactly alike. Elta lean into this — the slight mismatch between channels adds a natural stereo width that a perfectly matched pair wouldn't give you. The filter transistors need a few minutes to warm up before use, which feels fitting for something with this much analog temperament. A compact filter box for adding grit, movement and colour to just about anything — believe us, it sounds spectacular!
