Clank - Axis

The Axis by Clank is a comprehensive dual envelope generator that combines VCAs, a crossfader, and a mixer into a single module. It handles sound shaping across three dimensions: envelope duration (timeX), volume (rangeY), and stereo positioning (Z). The module features a completely analog signal path, but with digital control.

Unlike traditional ADSR envelopes, Axis uses a wavetable-based approach. The shape knob selects from various envelope profiles ranging from standard shapes to complex percussive patterns that simulate different material responses. These envelopes control analog VCAs that offer a middle ground between clean amplification and the natural response of an LPG - providing smooth transients without excessive coloration.

The module's versatility shines in its ability to replace multiple modules in a traditional signal chain. Originally, Axis was designed to recreate Vactrol-style responses without their limitations, but over its development process it evolved to become an even more versatile solution for dynamic control. The percussion section of the shape knob is worth a closer look for instance - it generates complex envelopes that mimic how different materials vibrate when struck, creating realistic bell, wood, and metallic tones from simple sound sources.

The module features complete normalization for immediate use - just connect audio inputs and outputs to integrate it into your patch. With separate function generator outputs, EOC triggers, and multiple operation modes (cycle, trigger, hold), Axis can function as both a sound processor and modulation source. The voltage-controllable mixer section adds even more more cases for this already jam-packed module, allowing for blending and crossfading between channels. Axis consolidates the entire envelope → VCA → mixer signal chain into a single cohesive module, with some pretty stellar extras to go with it making for a pretty solid choice.
