Blood Cells Audio’s Mangle — Passive Audio Destruction Through Creative Power Starvation
Developed in collaboration with Swedish composer and sound artist VAAAL, Mangle is a passive audio processor built for glitches, wrecked distortions, and murky textures. Here's the twist: it ignores your Eurorack power rails entirely. Instead, Mangle is powered by whatever CV you decide to feed into its Power Input jack. That CV drives the circuitry and manipulates your audio simultaneously — from wildly overdriven to voltage-starved and broken, with all the interesting tones lurking in between. Think of it as a sort of "brutalist VCA" where the audio level is controlled by powering the circuit itself up and down.
Two internal circuits offer different flavors of destruction. One uses a quality built-in audio chip; the other features a user-swappable chip accessible from the front panel. Experimentation is encouraged here — different chips yield different characters. Additional controls include switchable hard and soft asymmetrical diode clipping, a Gain switch for pushing things further into overdrive, and a Bias CV input for even more manipulation. The Snuff switch kills incoming power entirely, leaving you in 100% passive mode. A power-through jack lets you daisy-chain the powering CV to other Mangle modules downstream. Smooth or savage — Mangle responds to whatever you throw at it.
Features:
- Passive audio processor powered by external CV (not Eurorack rails)
- Switch between built-in circuitry and user-swappable front-panel chip
- Switchable asymmetrical soft/hard clipping
- Switchable gain
- Snuff switch kills incoming power CV for 100% passive mode
- Bias CV input for additional manipulation
- PWR thru jack passes incoming power CV to downstream modules
