Tobinski Interpolating Scanner — 8-Channel Signal Morphing Suite With Integrated VCAs & Harmonic Expansion.
Tobinski's 8-Channel Scanner/VCA module combines smooth signal blending and precise amplitude control. This dual-function module takes eight inputs and processes them through both an interpolating scanner and independent VCAs simultaneously.
The scanner section morphs between inputs rather than simply switching between them. Manual and CV control over scan position and width lets you target specific points in your sequence or create sweeping transitions across multiple channels. Three dedicated outputs (odd, even, and combined) give you some nice stereo routing options.
Running in parallel, eight high-quality VCAs offer independent gain control with dedicated CV inputs for each channel. Like the scanner, you get separate odd, even, and full mix outputs. A nice implementation: when you patch an individual VCA output, that signal automatically drops from the mix buses.
Eight sliders are arranged across the top of the panel and are switchable between controlling scanner levels, VCA levels, or both. Overall, the interface is easy to grasp and should make most of the routing rather hassle-free and immediate.
A place where this module really shines is in its integration with the Tobinski Harmonic Timing Generator (HTG). Connect the two via an internal ribbon cable, and the scanner inputs automatically receive the HTG's frequency-multiplied outputs through sine-shaping circuitry. This transforms the pair into a sophisticated harmonic oscillator capable of smooth timbre interpolation – from fundamental to various harmonics and all the spaces in between. The combination elevates both modules beyond their individual capabilities, creating a sound design tool that's both mathematically precise and musically expressive.
While most modules commit to a single task, the Tobinski Scanner/VCA thrives on multitasking - functioning as mixer, modulation processor, and with the HTG connected, even as a primary sound source. It's a practical implementation of parallel signal flow that keeps options open without overwhelming complexity.
