SSF Tape-Op — Discrete Tube & Tape Saturation with Switchable Pre/Post EQ
Tape-Op is an analog distortion module that emulates the saturation characteristics of vintage tube and tape equipment through pure circuit design. Built around a discrete op-amp with class-A output stage and multi-diode ladder, it delivers the compression curves and harmonic coloration of classic studio gear without requiring actual tubes or tape mechanisms (yet still all-analog!). The circuit generates everything from subtle tape warmth to aggressive tube overdrive, all while maintaining the musical compression behavior of such units, and without all the maintenance hassle such units might require.
This module combines saturation processing with a three-band Baxandall EQ that can be routed before or after the distortion circuit. This routing flexibility changes the entire character — pre-saturation EQ lets you drive specific frequencies harder into compression, while post-saturation placement shapes the harmonics generated by the distortion itself. The TAPE BIAS control adds asymmetrical clipping characteristics, shifting the harmonic content from even to odd orders depending on your settings.
Beyond basic saturation, Tape-Op functions as a characterful VCA with CV control over saturation amount, bias, and trim levels. The LIMIT switch engages a zener diode hard limiter for additional headroom control and extra crunch when needed. CV modulation opens up tremolo effects, envelope-controlled dynamics, and even extreme modulated distortion when driven by audio-rate signals.
This is saturation designed to go beyond subtle — while many tape emulations offer gentle coloration, this module can be pushed well past 11 into extreme distortion. Tape-Op covers a wide spectrum with an amazing choice of vintage analog character for your patches - pure destruction bliss :)
