Seaside Modular Proteus - The Self-Evolving Melodic Sequencer
Proteus approaches melodic sequencing from a novel angle. Previously available as a VCV module, this is the hardware re-incarnation. Named after the shape-shifting Greek sea god, this module generates musical sequences using algorithms that mimic human melodic tendencies - favoring repeated notes, ascending and descending runs, and scale-appropriate intervals. This also comes with a curious twist — Proteus has a built-in attention span. Set the "patience" parameter and watch as your sequence loops contentedly for a while, then suddenly decides it's time for something new. The probability of change increases over time according to a patience curve you control. You either go from instant ADHD or over to infinite loop mode.
The algorithmic generation goes deeper than simple randomness. A complexity knob lets you dial from simple two-note basslines to intricate melodic phrases that emphasize different compositional approaches. Once Proteus creates something you love, save it to one of four pattern slots. Add probability-based octave jumps and single-note mutations to keep things evolving even within a locked pattern. The module excels at finding that sweet spot between repetition and surprise — the spice that keeps listeners engaged. Eight step indicator lights show not just sequence position but also communicate rests, mutations, slews, and octave shifts through an well-implemented color system. There's also a USB slot dead center which, through a small USB-drive you can upload your own scala [.scl] files — [Input jubilant scream of joy from a 1000 microtonal-enthusiasts]. This module is different to say the least, but very much a joy to work with :)
