NONO Modular Major Tom Desktop — Brilliant Six-Track Polyrhythmic Sequencer
The Major Tom Desktop is NONO Modular’s flagship sequencer, pulled out of the rack and given its own standalone home. Inside, you get the full Major Tom engine plus both expanders, pre-wired and ready as a six-track CV/gate brain for your modular, drum machines, and synths. On the left sits that unmistakable circular 16-step interface with an outer ring of triplet steps, giving you up to 24 timing points per pattern. The layout and workflow make it surprisingly easy to program and think in polyrhythms.
Each of the six tracks has its own color on the round display and its own set of performance controls: a Variation knob that flips between stored patterns, a Last Step control for individual track lengths, and a Shift knob to nudge sequences against each other in time. On a per-step basis, you sculpt gates with four key parameters: Level, Length, Fragmentation, and quantized CV. With this, you can dial in tight triggers, long sustained gates, or chopped bursts that turn a single step into a flurry of hits. It’s fantastic for percussive synthesis, pinging filters and resonators, firing low-pass gates in West Coast patches, or driving drum voices while still having melodic CV lines under tight pitch control.
Over to the modulation side, its CV-expander offers 24 CV inputs, giving external control over gate level, length, cutting, track shifting, last step, and variation. With this, you can have another sequencer slowly changing pattern lengths, envelopes pushing gate density, or random sources deciding when a track flips to a new variation. Despite all this depth, it’s really straightforward to work with thanks to the well thought-out layout. MicroSD handles pattern and “live scene” storage, and Clock/Reset outputs keep the rest of your rig locked to whatever rhythmic rabbit hole you’ve just programmed.
What can we say — triplets have rarely felt this immediate and playable. If you're on the hunt for a new sequencer, the Major Tom Desktop is a splendid performance instrument for exploring rhythm and polyrhythms in a very hands-on way.
