NIIO Analog Gated Random — Compact Random CV Tool with Threshold and Probabilistic Gate Routing
Gated Random from NIIO analog is a sample & hold module that generates a new random CV level on every incoming gate, while simultaneously routing that same gate to one of two outputs. It’s a simple idea with much broader patch consequences — clock it, and you get a steady stream of voltages and a branching gate decision, all with fully analog circuitry.
The RANGE control sets how wide the voltages can spread (0–10V), and SHIFT moves the whole distribution up or down. Push SHIFT downward and more “random” results end up pinned at 0V — so instead of pure unpredictability, you’re effectively dialing in how often an event can happen. The GATE threshold then decides whether the incoming gate goes to OVER or UNDER depending on the sampled level, and a mode switch lets those outputs either follow the input gate length or toggle (latch/unlatch) per event. If the internal noise (its own source of random) isn’t your thing, patch an LFO, envelope, or even audio into SAMPLE and let that become the source of variation. LEDs keep everything readable, showing gate activity and level reference points (0V / 5V) as things unfold. NIIO analog really has a knack for curious logic, and this module is no different — a great source of controlled randomness.
Features:
- Analog sample & hold with internal noise source
- Random CV output, adjustable range: 0–10V
- SHIFT control + CV/audio input to offset levels (also acts as probability bias via 0V “pinning”)
- GATE threshold routes the incoming gate to OVER or UNDER based on sampled level
- Gate outputs can follow input length or toggle (latch/unlatch) per trigger
- External SAMPLE input replaces the internal noise with any CV or audio source
- LED indicators for active gate output + level references (0V / 5V)
