Lumatic Visual Devices - Rorschach

The Rorschach by Lumatic Visual Devices is a compact, hybrid analog/digital video synthesizer that generates black and white composite video patterns and also doubles as a drone voice. Hand-built in the UK as a collaboration between audio device maker Decadebridge and visual artist Mundane Consciousness, it sits right at the intersection of two worlds that have always had a lot to say to each other — sound and image.

Four main controls shape the pattern in real time — horizontal position, vertical position, width, and height — each with its own CV input. A Form knob selects between six pattern generator modes and can be driven by audio or control voltage, meaning your kick drum or sequencer can directly influence the visuals. A dedicated random section lets Rorschach run autonomously, generating evolving patterns on the fly, with independent switches and gate inputs for each random parameter. Throw in horizontal and vertical mirroring (also gate-controllable), three clear-screen modes, and a colour switch for white, black, or inverted patterns, and you end up with 13 modulation inputs in total. Plenty of room to get weird!

The audio output is a nice extra touch — it converts the generated video signal into a noisy, textured drone, which means Rorschach can contribute to the sonic side of a live performance as well. Powered by a 9V battery (or a center-positive wall adapter), it's portable enough to throw in a bag. A friendly entry point into the world of video synthesis and a surprisingly capable tool for anyone already deep in it!
