Ferry Island’s Four Seas — A “Four-Dimensional” Wavetable Oscillator for Chords, Textures, and Evolving Modulation
The main idea behind the Four Seas from Helsinki's Ferry Island Modular is simple but powerful – it's a wavetable oscillator that generates four related audio outputs from a single core. This is fantastic for creating textures without having to patch up four separate VCOs. There's a clear preference for hands-on control over menu-diving – there's no screen, just a neat, playable interface.
The sound-shaping starts with three main knobs – X, Y, and Z POS. These let you define a position inside a "three-dimensional wavetable space" inside of what the manual calls an "8x8x8 coordinate cube". Whatever a coordinate cube is, it sounds intriguing :) Another nice feature is its Spread controls, which take that single point in sound-space and fan it out across the four outputs based on selectable harmonic ratios, moving everything from a tight unison to rich, detuned chords.
Beyond that, you get plenty of tools for further shaping. There are two channels for oscillator modulation (including phase modulation and distortion) and two sync inputs with different types. A very practical touch is that each pair of outputs can be flipped into LFO mode, turning the module into a source of complex, related modulation for the rest of your system. It's got twelve factory wavetable banks and the option to load your own. All in all this is an intriguing module that has a pretty vast sound palette to offer!
Features:
- Four-dimensional wavetable oscillator with four audio outputs
- Navigate a 3D wavetable space (8×8×8 cube) with X, Y, and Z position controls
- "Spread" function detunes the four outputs according to 8 selectable harmonic modes
- Independent X, Y, and Z Spread controls for creating timbral variations between the four outputs
- Two channels of Oscillator Modulation with Phase Modulation, Phase Distortion, and FSU modes
- Two Sync inputs with Hard, Soft, and Flip sync types
- Outputs can be switched in pairs to LFO mode
- Supports user-created wavetables
- Extensive CV control over almost all parameters
- Linear FM input with attenuverter
