Proteo by Clank — Evolving Dual Channel Wavetable Oscillator / Signal Looper.
Proteo is a stereo wavetable oscillator that captures and freezes incoming signals for use as sound sources. Named after the shapeshifting Greek god Proteus, the module doesn't have a predefined sound of its own—instead, it transforms any input into playable waveforms. This interesting process lets you repurpose envelopes, LFOs, or any other signal as unique sound sources, giving you an endless palette of tonal possibilities.
The module features a dual wavetable oscillator with two separate outputs. By default, the right oscillator is tuned one octave below the left, but the Span control allows for a total range of five octaves - from four octaves below to one octave above the left channel. An integrated oscilloscope shows the waveforms in real-time, while the Morph controls let you blend the complex captured waveforms with clean sine waves for better pitch clarity. This is because continuously evolving waveforms with a lot of harmonics can make it difficult to hear what note is coming out of Proteo sometimes, depending on what you feed it.
The Time control is central to Proteo's operation, functioning like a virtual tape loop. Turning clockwise captures longer fragments at slower speeds, giving you a wider "window" of sound, while counterclockwise rotation captures small details at faster speeds. This flexibility allows for everything from granular-like textures to evolving drones. The normalization between channels means you can quickly achieve stereo effects with minimal patching, while the comprehensive CV inputs for Time, Speed, Span, and Morph parameters ensure deep integration with modular systems.
For performance, Proteo offers both manual freeze buttons and gate inputs. The buttons operate in latching mode, allowing you to permanently hold a waveform until released, while the gate inputs provide momentary freezing that synchronizes with your patch. This combination of intuitive controls and visual feedback makes Proteo a true sound sculptor's tool that transforms fleeting audio moments into playable sources.
