Erica Synths Xenodrive — A Trio of Beautiful Distortions in One Desktop Unit
The Xenodrive is a stereo distortion and waveshaper developed by Erica Synths in collaboration with the software geniuses over at 112db. Three stages of harmonic manipulation are chained in series: an analog gain stage (up to +24dB), a germanium diode overdrive emulation with tone control, and a wavetable-based waveshaper. The waveshaper draws from 256 waveforms arranged in a 16x16 grid. As you increase the shaper gain, it begins folding the signal on top of the selected waveform. An envelope follower can modulate wave selection dynamically based on input level.
A built-in compressor sits before the distortion stages, while an EQ with sweepable center frequency and optional resonance ("scream") follows the waveshaper. A noise gate at the end tames the more aggressive patches. All of its 12 main parameters are hands-on and fully MIDI-controllable. Presets can be saved, sorted, and morphed between with adjustable fade times. The unit ships with 42 factory presets and stores up to 60 user patches, all backed up via USB. Balanced stereo I/O and a configurable footswitch input round things out. All in all, this is a reliable source of harmonic damage and a satisfying way to make things sound worse (in the best possible sense!).
