DPW Design's WF2 — An Unusual Positive/Negative Wavefolder and CV Sculptor
The WF2 from Swedish manufacturer DPW takes a different approach to wavefolding. Rather than treating the incoming signal as one entity, it splits the folding duties between positive and negative portions of the wave, giving you independent control over how each half gets mangled. This dual-folder architecture opens up asymmetrical folding possibilities that can turn a simple triangle wave into complex, harmonically rich waveforms — or transform control voltages into stepped sequences and triggers.
The module goes beyond basic folding with some clever extras. Each folder can output a square wave that goes high when that folder is active, essentially giving you two comparators that track your folding thresholds. These FOLD P and FOLD N outputs are useful for instance when triggering events based on signal levels or adding rhythmic gates to your folded audio. The output section includes two flavours of distortion — a compressed limiting type and a fuzzier variety — that can push your sounds from gentle saturation into the direction of chaos. The included E2 expander (a passive 2HP companion) brings CV control to these distortion modes, letting you switch between clean and dirty on the fly via gates, triggers, or even audio-rate signals for some seriously mangled results. Everything stays DC coupled throughout, so envelope mangling and CV processing are just as viable as audio destruction.
Features:
- Dual independent wavefolders for positive and negative signal portions
- Asymmetrical or symmetrical folding modes via SYM switch
- DC coupled signal path for audio and CV processing
- FOLD P and FOLD N outputs generate ±5V square waves when folders are active
- Two CV inputs (P and N) with attenuverters for modulating folder thresholds
- MOD control for blending folded signal with clean via CLEAN control
- Three output modes: Clean (0), Limiting distortion (LIM), Fuzz distortion (DIST)
- Visual feedback via multiple LEDs showing signal polarity and folder activity
- Includes passive E2 expander (2HP) for CV control of distortion modes
