Catalyst Audio MIG Mix — 4-Channel All-Analog Tube Mixer, Summing With Built-In Soviet-Tube Character
Catalyst Audio’s MIG Mix is a fully analog four-input vacuum tube mixer built around a 1J24b subminiature tube. These NOS (New Old Stock) Cold War-era vintage tubes were originally fabricated for use in MiG fighter jets, and are brimming with character. Each of the four inputs has its own level control, and the mixed signal is then fed through the tube stage before leaving the main output.
The useful trick here is gain staging. You can set the input levels low and the output level high, or push the inputs harder and keep the output lower, and both approaches can land at a similar final volume. Obviously, they will not sound the same in this case, because the signals hit the tube circuitry differently. That makes MIG Mix useful as a small summing mixer, but also as a simple way to add tube saturation, compression and a bit of unruly circuit behaviour to several signals at once.
This unit is great for summing a handful of voices when you'd rather have warmth and grit than some ultra clean hi-fi'ish neutrality.
