With the KTBK-1B, Audio Merge puts the legendary “Big Knob” from King Tubby’s dub productions into a compact format for modern studios.
The unit is modeled after the classic Altec 9069B and combines its passive high-pass filter with additional features for greater versatility than the original. Whether for thinning out low frequencies, precisely shaping sounds, or creating distinctive dub-style filter sweeps—these sweeps are truly striking because the “Big Knob” features a stepped design. While this may seem unusual at first, it offers the advantage of making precise frequency jumps during use.
The fully passive signal path operates without a power supply. The cutoff frequency of the high-pass filter is selected via the detented rotary switch in ten steps between 70 Hz and 7.5 kHz. Three operating modes provide different sonic characteristics: 600 emulates the behavior of the original Altec filter. BELL adds pronounced resonance to the high-pass filter and is particularly well-suited for more expressive sounds. NOTCH enables a variable notch filter characteristic, whose attenuation and Q vary depending on the cutoff frequency and resonance setting.An additional six-step attenuation control allows you to adjust the resonance response in BELL and NOTCH modes. This ranges from subtle sound shaping to more pronounced filter effects. Audio Merge places great emphasis on authentic sound, which is why every unit is handcrafted and tested in Barcelona.
