FLUX by SOMA — Theremin 2.0
FLUX is Soma's own take on the Theremin concept, obviously with their own unique twist as we've all come to expect by now.
FLUX reimagines electronic instrument control through a forward-thinking magnetic interface. Unlike traditional synths with their forest of knobs and faders, FLUX offers a rather minimal yet deeply expressive approach using magnetic bows and a "smart", responsive surface.
Central to this instrument is the magnetic keyboard that spans three octaves plus one note, divided into two distinct areas: the Notes section for pitch control and the Timbres section for sound sculpting. Two magnetic bows become your primary tools for navigating this futuristic instrument - one for each hand. The interplay between bow position, distance, and tilt opens up a lot of expressive possibilities.
The synthesis engine packs some serious computational power, featuring up to 37 different synthesis algorithms. Each algorithm is essentially a complete instrument with its own unique character and control scheme. From classic vocal timbres and physical modeling to experimental digital synthesis and wild bytebeat textures.
Real performance flexibility comes through in FLUX's various playing modes. It can operate monophonically like a Theremin, duophonically with independent control of two voices, or polyphonically with up to 12 voices depending on the algorithm. A percussive mode adds sharp attacks for more rhythmic playing styles.
Sound design goes deep with features like adjustable release times, spatial effects, and comprehensive preset management. The magnetic interface allows for expressive parameter control that would be difficult to achieve with traditional controls. Especially noteworthy is the ability to create complex multi-polar magnetic fields by combining different bow positions - something clearly unique to FLUX's architecture.
The digital heart of FLUX connects to the analog world through some nicely designed circuits that promises to deliver on the sound quality front. Custom optocouplers handle volume control while also maintaining audio in the realm of supreme. The output section provides balanced stereo outs plus a dedicated headphone output.
FLUX manages to be both radical in its interface design and thoroughly musical in its implementation. While its learning curve is a new territory altogether, the instrument should reward anyone who's willing to put in the effort with a plethora of new forms of musical expression.

Soma is Vlad Kreimer's "romantic engineering" endeavour into musical instrument design. While the Lyra-8 organismic synthesizer and the Ether wide-band receiver have already gained a bunch of adherents, the Pulsar-23 has created an unprecedented expectation.
