Smear is a filter module, but forget everything you know about lowpass, highpass, bandpass and the like. This one doesn't cut frequencies at all. Smoothie Audio's debut module stacks 98 allpass filter poles in series — a topology normally buried inside reverb and diffusion algorithms — and turns it into something playable. The result is closer to a multi-FX than a traditional filter: spectral delays that smear transients apart, phaser-like sweeps, resonant metallic textures, and even percussive physical modeling sounds. There really isn't much else like it in Eurorack.
The panel is symmetrical with two identical sections. Stereo signal flows left to right by default, but a Split mode lets each side work independently. Each section has Frequency, Resonance, and Stages controls, all with CV inputs. Frequency and Resonance get attenuverters. A global Feedback control at the center pushes things into self-resonant territory — feed it triggers and you can coax pitched percussion out of thin air. The Stage sliders determine how many of those 98 poles are active and allow crossfading between configurations. Modulate them and the whole thing starts moving in ways that are hard to predict.
A focused and quite unique debut from Smoothie Audio. Good for spectral processing, animated phase effects, percussion synthesis, and adding a kind of movement to sounds that no conventional filter can!
