Organic Audio Cjossul V2 — Hybrid Contact Microphone And Hydrophone
Sometimes the most interesting sounds are hidden from our ears, locked away inside objects or submerged beneath the water's surface. Cjossul V2 from the Italian artisans Manuele Pertoldi and Andrea Peluso at Organic Audio is a tool designed specifically to uncover these vibrations. It is a dual-purpose device, acting as both a magnetic contact microphone and a hydrophone, offering a simple and intuitive way to explore the sonic world beyond the airwaves.
Using Cjossul is easy — thanks to the magnets on its capsule, it attaches firmly to any metallic surface, capturing the subtle resonances and textures moving through the material. Submerge it in water, and it becomes a hydrophone, revealing the hidden sounds of the liquid domain. To capture the full frequency spectrum, especially the low end, it's best to connect the Cjossul to a Hi-Z/Instrument input or use an impedance adapter (Hosa MIT-129 Impedance Transformer (1/4" to XLR)). This small step ensures you get the rich, detailed bass response the microphone is capable of delivering.
This is the second iteration of Cjossul, and it brings several practical improvements focused on durability for field use. The capsule is now waterproofed with organic silicon and reinforced with an aluminum ring, making it more robust for your explorations. The design has been refined with a new bioplastic case, reflecting the Organic Audio's commitment to using recyclable and locally sourced materials wherever possible.
Cjossul, whose name means "thing" or "tool" in the Friulano language (from the Friuli region in northeastern Italy) is exactly that: a beautifully simple and effective tool for sound designers, field recordists, and anyone curious about the sounds hidden all around us.
