The Workshop System from Music Thing Modular is a compact analog synthesizer combined with a flexible “Computer” module
This Computer can be reprogrammed using small plug-in cards. Unlike the DIY kit version available elsewhere, this is a fully assembled and tested system – ready to play straight out of the box.
The Workshop System includes more than a dozen modules, covering all the essential building blocks of a solid beginner’s setup, along with several special components that turn it into a versatile and creative playground.
At its core, the system offers two VCOs with sine and square outputs, as well as two filters with switchable characteristics, providing both band-pass and low-pass options. There are also two Slopes modules, which can function as envelopes, LFOs, or slew limiters. On the right side, you’ll find a stereo mixer and two headphone outputs – the essentials that every system benefits from. It’s particularly nice that many of the key modules are included in pairs, allowing for more flexible patching and stereo setups.
To integrate external signals, the Workshop System provides multiple options: a Stereo In module for amplifying incoming signals and splitting a stereo jack into two mono inputs, as well as the Stompbox module for inserting external effects into the system. Additional utilities include a Ring Modulator for more experimental tones, an Amplifier (capable of overdrive) with a built-in contact microphone that picks up tapping or drumming on the panel, and the 4 Voltages section – four assignable voltage sources selectable by buttons. These can modulate various parameters within the system – for example oscillator pitch, effectively creating a small mini keyboard.
Now to the highlight of the system – the Computer module. This digital platform uses small plug-in program cards that determine its function. The cards contain programs such as MIDI interfaces, reverbs, Turing Machines, and more. Six CV inputs and outputs offer extensive flexibility for creative coding. Users can write their own programs or use creations from the community to continually expand the system’s sonic possibilities. The Computer module can transform this semi-modular synthesizer into a new instrument every day – perhaps even with your first self-made program on a card.
These modules together cover the essential functions of a modular synthesizer: sound generation (oscillators), tone shaping (filters), modulation, and control. The Computer module extends this foundation with digital functions such as sequencing, effects, or interface tools – depending on the card in use.
The PSU behind the panel is a power supply that runs on USB-C PD power or professional 15-25v barrel connectors. It works from battery powerbanks and laptop adaptors, most likely something you’ve already got at home.
