Frequency Central Klang Stadt — 8-Bit Digital Wavetable Oscillator Based on Electric Druid's VCDO
Frequency Central's Klang Stadt is a digital wavetable oscillator built around Electric Druid's VCDO chip, and it sounds like little else in the rack. Its wavetable holds 16 waveforms you're unlikely to have met before — no plain ramps or triangles here, plenty of oscillators already do those.. You scan and crossfade through them by hand or under CV, and because the whole thing runs at 8-bit, a grainy, lo-fi edge is baked into the sound from the start.
There's a sub oscillator with eight waveforms of its own, selectable across four octaves (including one above the main pitch), plus a Sub Two output that's a wavefolded version of the first. An onboard LFO rides the waves for you, Glide adds portamento, and the Crush knob drops the bit depth from 8-bit all the way down to 1-bit for total digital grit. Then there's the Klang output — a deliberately filthy signal that Frequency Central themselves note you can tape over if it scares you.. We'd leave it uncovered.
All in all, a characterful, slightly unhinged sound source.
