Weston Precision Audio HV1 — Dual-Nature Analog/Digital VCO with Wavetable Powers
Weston Precision Audio bridges two synthesis worlds with their HV1 hybrid Oscillator. Its analog triangle-core VCO anchors the left side with classic sine, saw, triangle, and pulse outputs, delivering the warm character you expect from analog circuitry. The right side offers a set of "hybrid" outputs that stem from a digital phase shifter that processes the analog triangle at 150kHz. It creates phase-shifted versions of the same waveforms and also comes with a morphable wavetable output that can load custom banks from the front-panel SD card.
The phase relationship between left and right outputs becomes a powerful sound design tool through dedicated Phase Angle controls and linear phase modulation. Add the digital detune function (accessible through the menu), and you essentially have two oscillators that can be tuned to parallel intervals or slightly offset for phasing/chorus-y effects. The wavetable section supports 16-way morphing through both manual control and CV, accepting WaveEdit and Serum formats.
The Aux CV input can be routed to either wave folding (with five different algorithms) or bit crushing of the hybrid outputs. Combined with sync options, through-zero FM, and PWM, the HV1 covers a wide range of timbres and textures. Wavetable navigation, system settings and several other features are all handled by the main dial and the menu screen. The HV1 is built on a simple premise, a pristine analog source and its endlessly malleable digital reflection. It's a really nice oscillator for generating a vast spectrum of sounds.
