Verbos Electronics Voltage Multistage 16 – the next evolutionary leap in multistage technology offers many new features!
The Voltage Multistage 16 is the latest development of the original Voltage Multistage from Verbos Electronics, which was released in 2014. Although the new version doubles the number of steps to sixteen, it is not simply a ‘multistage with 16 stages’. The completely redesigned sequencer core enables patch and performance techniques that were not possible with the original.
Yes, we all wanted to finally see 16 steps in the Multistage – and of course it tempts you to simply create 16-step loops, but Mark Verbos rightly points out that the Voltage Multistage 16 absolutely invites you to break out of the rigid 16 steps and explore the creative possibilities of the module. The new Stage Select Inputs help with this, allowing you to create multiple shorter sequences using the Stage Gate Outputs, switch between them and then loop them.
With 16 stages, two rows of faders and switchable slides per step, Multistage 16 can do much more than just sequencing – the module can also be used as an LFO, complex envelope, clock source or complex modulation generator.
The revised internal architecture allows for new interaction possibilities between the individual stages, moving away from rigid 16-step sequences. The new stage select gate inputs can be used to jump between steps or sequence sections for particularly flexible sequence control. In addition, the stage gate outputs can be patched into the enable, sustain or strobe inputs to create complex connections between steps.
The new sequencer core also recognises when a new stage is activated. If Strobe is ‘latched’ and a varying CV signal changes the step, the module outputs a gate signal (as well as corresponding ramp and slide signals on CV A) at each stage change instead of keeping the gate permanently active. This mode of operation allows for more dynamic and expressive patches.
As with the original, slides and stages can be switched on/off, and the time setting can be modulated via CV – for example, by patching CV A or B into the Time CV input. This is where things get interesting and wonky – Morton Subotnick anyone? Since the duration of the slides depends on the length of the respective step, very complex multi-stage envelopes or evolving modulations can be created. Conveniently, all outputs are now equipped with LED indicators that provide clear visual feedback during playback.
Despite its expanded functionality, Voltage Multistage 16 remains relatively compact, with a width of 42 HP and a very shallow depth, making it a perfect fit for the Verbos Black Box and ideal for use as a standalone performance sequencer.
