UDO Audio DMNO — 8-Voice Binaural Hybrid Synth With Dual Engines, 8 Creative Play Modes, Per-Voice Stereo VCF, Gorgeous VFD Display, Built-In Audio Interface. This One's Special!
UDO Audio is back with something really special. DMNO (Domino) is essentially two synthesizers in one instrument — two independent 4-voice analog-hybrid engines, each with its own oscillators, filters, envelopes, and dedicated front panel controls. You can layer them, split them, alternate between them, or route one into the other. Eight Play Modes determine how these engines interact, from more conventional configurations to more unpredictable ones. Series mode, for instance, feeds DMNO 1's audio output into DMNO 2's oscillator mixer, turning the first synth into a complex sound source for the second. DMNO is not simply a reskin of UDO's Super series but a wholly different take — a synth that not only delivers sleek pads, but also is able to reach further into the territory of odd timbres, should you want to. And let us tell you, it sounds like utter magic :)
Each engine runs FPGA-based oscillators with UDO's super-waveform architecture, featuring what they call a "centroid" oscillator surrounded by six "sister" oscillators that can be dynamically de-phased across the stereo field. These feed into the Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo VCF — a per-voice analog filter with switchable topology. Run the filter cores in parallel, series, or stereo mode, each offering different combinations of lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and more. The binaural signal path takes things further: in binaural mode, left and right channels each get their own complete voice with independent detuning and modulation, trading voice count for spatial depth. This isn't a synth that comes packaged with just sweet spots — its sound palette is a great place for hunting down the odd, the unique, and the in-between.
A 32-bit DSP effects chain rounds things out with syncable delay, reverb, multi-mode distortion, chorus, and a three-band EQ. These are send and insert effects that can stay subtle or push into more aggressive territory while remaining musical. Connectivity includes a stereo input with variable-gain preamp and envelope follower (which feeds into the mod matrix), and CV/gate outputs for modular integration. A feature that isn't all that common but is extremely handy: the built-in 2-in/2-out 24-bit USB audio interface makes it ultra-simple to record straight into your DAW by just connecting the synth directly to your computer via USB. VFD displays are an uncommon sight on synthesizers — a couple of Ensoniq synths had them way back when, but other than that, it's rare. UDO has included one here, and it handles patch management and visual feedback for whatever parameter you're controlling. (For the geeks curious about VFD technology, this primer makes for solid Friday evening viewing.) This one's a proper instrument — deep when you want it, immediate when you need it, and definitely one to be excited about!
