Tobinski Cali — 258-Style Waveshaping Oscillator with Bonus "Trapezoid Mode"
Cali is Tobinski’s take on the classic Buchla 258 waveshaping oscillator, updated with a few extra tricks. You get the familiar sine-to-square and sine-to-saw output with dedicated CV control over waveshape, plus a separate pulse output with its own width control and PWM input. Linear and exponential FM inputs with attenuators, coarse and fine tuning, and an LFO mode give you the usual VCO tools for both audio-rate tones and slower modulation duties.
Where Cali differs from other 258-style designs is the three-position waveshape switch. The standard positions cover sine-to-square and sine-to-saw, while the middle position introduces a “bonus” waveform that morphs from pulse into a kind of trapezoidal / triangular shape. In this mode, the shaping can behave a bit more erratically and even reacts to physical touch when the shape is set low, making it especially nice for glitchy, unstable sounds. The pulse output also responds to the switch and shaping control, so its behavior changes as you move through the different modes.
An LED pushbutton toggles LFO range and doubles as a visual rate indicator by lighting on the positive cycle. Because waveshape modulation is independent from pitch, Cali is well suited for complex timbres that still sit reliably in tune — a flexible primary or secondary oscillator with a clear 258 lineage and a few extra edges — a solid riff on a West Coast classic!
Features:
- Buchla 258-style analog oscillator with added pulse/PWM output
- Main output morphs continuously from sine to saw or sine to square, with CV over shape
- 3-position waveform switch with unique “bonus” middle mode (pulse-to-trapezoid behavior)
- Pulse output with manual width control and voltage-controlled PWM
- Linear and Exponential (logarithmic) FM input with attenuator
- Coarse and fine frequency controls
- LFO mode selectable via LED pushbutton (also acts as rate indicator)
- Wave shaping independent from pitch for complex, yet tuneful timbres
- Includes power supply isolation on frequency controls
