Shakmat Lancer’s Lash — Seven Approaches to Snare Synthesis, With Dedicated Effects and a Nice Bit of Random
Lancer’s Lash is a digital snare drum synthesizer for Eurorack, covering familiar drum-machine hits, resonant acoustic-style bodies and percussion that has wandered some distance from a snare. Its seven models approach the job differently: sine waves and noise provide the classic electronic foundation, physical modelling explores vibrating drum bodies, and FM takes things towards metallic strikes and sharp digital claps. There’s also a granular model inspired by placing objects on a snare, plus a sample-layering engine called BLEND which draws on boom-bap samples sourced from 70s funk records.
The controls stay consistent across the models: Pitch and Decay handle tuning and length, while Timbre and Color shape the ingredients of the selected engine. Depending on the model, that might mean balancing noise against the body, shifting harmonic relationships or changing the density of a granular layer. All four have dedicated CV inputs. Each model also gets its own effects processing, chosen to suit the sound—from clipping and multiband distortion to compression and old-sampler roughness.
For variation between hits, the onboard randomizer lets you set a separate amount for each destination. You can keep the pitch steady while the decay and noise character shift ever so slightly, or even more dramatically, let it change the synthesis model altogether. Velocity adds control over dynamics, and 256 preset slots let you keep the parts you like, with CV selection within the active bank and Select Bus recall. All in all, Lancer's Lash offers a useful amount of control over both the sound itself and how much it changes from hit to hit, a pretty broad palette of colors for your backbeat.
