Schlappi Engineering’s Eddy — 3-Channel Stereo Mixer With Sidechain, Distortion, Feedback Paths & No-Input Mixing Capabilities
Eddy is a three-channel stereo mixer from Schlappi Engineering, and in typical Schlappi fashion, it has a few unusual ideas baked in. On the surface, it's a compact submixer: three CV-controlled stereo channels, a fourth input that doubles as either a mono sum or a sidechain feed, and a peak meter to keep an eye on things. What sits behind the mix bus is what's interesting — every signal passes through a built-in feedback compressor and an aggressive distortion stage, and a switch on the panel lets you tap MIX, COMP or DIST at the main outs. An optional expander, Cascade, breaks out the individual VCA outputs and the filter bands when you want more access to Eddy's guts.
The feedback paths are what give Eddy its second personality. With nothing patched into a channel's left input, that channel is normalized to a feedback bus running through three fixed bandpass filters — low, mid and high — sitting after the distortion stage. Flip an input switch up and the channel starts feeding itself. From there, it's a short trip into no-input mixing territory, with the distortion and compressor shaping the loop in ways that range from rough rumble to outright howl. Patch percussive envelopes into the CV inputs — Schlappi's own Boundary Layer makes for a terrific pairing here — and the three bands will behave like a small feedback drum voice, bass, mid and high, all coming from the mixer itself, no oscillator required.
In short, it's a submixer with a second life as a feedback instrument — good for tightening up a stereo bus, sidechain ducking, or going fully off-grid into self-oscillating noise and percussion.
Features:
- 3 CV-controlled stereo channels
- Invert/mute switch per channel
- Fourth input switchable between mono sum and external sidechain
- Built-in feedback VCA compressor
- Aggressive distortion stage
- Output switch selects MIX, COMP, or DIST at the main outs
- Normalized feedback through three fixed bandpass filters (≈70 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.1 kHz) for no-input mixing and percussion synthesis
- Peak meter showing positive and negative peaks
- Rear header for line-level input on channel 3
- Rear trimmer for compressor threshold
- Pairs naturally with Schlappi Engineering's Boundary Layer
- Cascade expander (sold separately) adds individual VCA outs and per-filter outputs
