Grayscale Helix: A Classic, Reimagined — Plaits in Remastered Glory
Mutable Instruments' Plaits is a module that needs little introduction; its sound and versatility have made it a classic in modern Eurorack. Grayscale, a company known for its thoughtful redesigns and high-quality alternate panels, has stepped forward with Helix—not as a clone, but as a carefully thought-out evolution. It addresses many of the "what if" scenarios that Plaits users have had the time to dream up over the years, building upon the classic with new and practical features.
The most noticeable change is the user interface. The expanded panel isn't just for show; it makes room for a full LED matrix that displays all the algorithms at once, eliminating the need for bank-switching or cheat sheets. It keeps the 24 synthesis engines that made Plaits a rack staple and slips in a 25th — a Lo-Fi model that sounds like a crusty cassette left on a dashboard. With dedicated knobs for the LPG/VCA level (AMP) and envelope decay time, Helix immediately feels less like just an oscillator and more like a complete, playable synth voice. These hardware additions provide direct, hands-on control where it was previously hidden in sub-menus.
Beyond the immediate controls, Helix adds deeper musical and modular integration. A built-in pitch quantizer with 35 scales spanning everything from plain vanilla major to “why not 19 notes per octave?” This makes melodic patching effortless, while a new triggerable randomization engine can introduce subtle or more drastic variations to your settings. The internal envelope is no longer trapped inside the module, thanks to new ENV and EOD outputs. Furthermore, a clever CTRL input acts as a modulation bus, allowing a single external signal to command multiple parameters at once. Helix respects its origins while confidently forging its own path as a powerful, performance-oriented instrument. If you liked Plaits but wanted better hands-on control and a few more tricks, Helix is the modern alternative that finally answers those wishes.
