Future Sound Systems Cric — Matrix Reborn.
The Future Sound Systems Cric represents a thoughtful approach to analog synthesis, combining traditional concepts with modern engineering. The synthesizer's pin matrix system, featuring 24 sources and 32 destinations, evokes memories of vintage telephone switchboards – though instead of connecting calls, each patch point routes signals that shape and transform sound. This hands-on approach to signal routing brings a level of immediacy and experimentation that menu-diving simply can't match.
Cric employs three SSI2131-based oscillators in what FSS calls their "recombination method." The primary "Scissor" oscillator works in conjunction with two companion oscillators (labeled +DNA and -DNA), creating a sophisticated system for generating complex harmonic content. The interaction between these oscillators extends beyond simple stacking or detuning, offering precise control over frequency modulation and waveform shaping.
The synthesizer's filter section demonstrates equal attention to detail, built around the SSI2164 chip and providing an 18dB slope across low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes. What makes this filter special is its ability to mix these modes simultaneously, along with an integrated wave folder that adds another dimension of timbral manipulation. The addition of four function generators extends the sound-shaping possibilities further – these can serve as envelope generators, low-frequency oscillators, or even additional sound sources when pushed into the audio range.
The Cric's connectivity options reflect its versatility as a studio instrument. Four DC-coupled inputs and outputs allow for extensive integration with other equipment, while the inclusion of a microphone preamp on the first input channel invites experimentation with external sound sources. The steel casing and sturdy end panels show that it's built for serious long-term use.
Perhaps most notably, Cric achieves something increasingly rare in modern synthesis: it manages to be both sophisticated and approachable. While its pin matrix might initially seem daunting, it actually provides a more tangible and intuitive way to understand signal flow compared to the virtual patching of many contemporary instruments. Each physical connection represents a real audio or control path, making the process of sound design both visual and tactile. What can we say, it’s a beautiful instrument!
