Frequency Central Whiteface — ARP 4023 Filter From The "Whiteface" Odyssey Mk1, Brought To Eurorack
The ARP 4023 was the filter inside the first ARP Odyssey Mk1 — the white-faced one — and it has a sound all its own: thick, a little aggressive, and better still when you drive it. Whiteface is a four-pole low-pass built around that circuit, with cutoff and resonance, two audio inputs and two CV inputs. The audio path stays pure ARP, so the character carries over.
A couple of clever ideas sit behind the panel. The original CV section needed rare parts and matched transistors, so FC dropped in a Roland-style circuit instead — same vibe, much simpler. The other fix concerns resonance, which clips harshly past a point on the original schematic. A single resistor change sorts that out, and here it stays musical across the whole range.
Because the 4023 filter was wired inside the Odyssey rather than built to feed patch cables, FC added an inverting buffer to bring the output up to modular levels. This also comes with a neat little trick: mix a little dry signal back in with the filtered output, find the sweet spot, and the low-pass doubles as a high-pass.
Very nice as a characterful main filter for a mono voice, and for anyone after that white-faced Odyssey sound without chasing down an original.
