Doepfer A-155-2 — Compact 8-Step Sequencer With Some Hidden Extras.
The A-155-2 is a classic Doepfer module in the best sense: a compact, no-nonsense analog sequencer that does exactly what it's supposed to, plus a few nifty extras. It comes with eight steps, each with a CV knob and a backlit gate button. It's a fast and immediate way to create patterns, but a closer look reveals a deeper feature set hidden behind its interface.
By using the "Program" toggle switch at the bottom in combination with the function buttons, you can access a whole other layer of control. This is where you can program the sequence length, select from a generous list of running directions (including pendulum and random), and even add ratcheting on a per-step basis.
For a module of this size, the inclusion of a preset system for storing up to eight complete patterns is a nice addition, especially in a live context. The CV output is unquantized, true to its analog nature, with selectable voltage ranges to fit whatever you're patching it into. Worth noting: there's no built-in clock generator, so you'll need an external clock source. For those needing precise pitch control, Doepfer included an internal MIDI header that sends note data - useful if you want to drive a MIDI-to-CV interface for quantized results. You can pair it with planned modules like the A-190-9 Micro-CV-Interface or the A-180-8 universal MIDI module for expanded MIDI functionality. It's a thoughtful, densely packed sequencer that offers a lot of creative potential.
