Enter The Matrix: After Later Audio's Keanu
After Later Audio's collaboration with Tim Held of Podular Modcast has resulted in something rather special. Keanu is a 4x4 matrix mixer that transforms the familiar into the extraordinary by integrating a rich selection of modulation sources right into its DNA.
The mixer's four channels each come with their own personality. Channels 1 and 2 host clockable looping function generators with adjustable rise and fall times, complete with trigger outputs marking the end of each stage. Meanwhile, channels 3 and 4 introduce what After Later calls "meandering voltage sources" - a fascinating combination of three independent LFOs running at different speeds. These can be shaped from square to triangle waves via a slew control that also affects any external signals you might feed in.
One thing that makes Keanu clever is how it normalizes these modulation sources to the mixer inputs while still allowing you to patch in external voltages. Each output features its own VCA and a switch for toggling between unipolar and bipolar behavior.
The matrix layout invites experimentation: each knob becomes a scaling tool for modulation depth, allowing you to craft complex control voltage relationships that would typically require multiple modules. This makes Keanu equally capable of gentle, evolving modulations and wild, interconnected voltage manipulations.
The deeper you dive into Keanu's matrix, the more its true nature reveals itself. After Later Audio has crafted something cleverly deceptive here - what appears to be a simple grid of knobs turns out to be a gateway to some pretty endless modulation possibilities. Like Neo choosing between realities, you can approach it systematically or jump straight into experimentation. The beauty is that in this matrix, you're always in control of how deep you want to go.
