Wavy Industries - MONKEY

MONKEY is a two-octave Bluetooth MIDI keyboard roughly the size of a bar of chocolate — 150 × 50 mm and about as thick as the circuit board inside it. The keybed starts on F and uses low-force buttons rather than any kind of piano action, which is the honest trade for this ultra-mini format. There's no USB socket and no cable of any kind; it pairs over Bluetooth with macOS, iOS, Android, Windows, CME WIDI and plenty of standalone gear. One CR2032 coin cell runs it for months, and you never really turn it off — a lock switch disables the keys for travel, otherwise it handles its own power saving.

The SHIFT key is where the rest of it lives. Hold it and the bottom keys become a control panel: octave, tempo, MIDI channel, note hold, six MIDI effects and the loop recorder. The effects are ARP, DBL (each key you press comes back with extra notes at set intervals), STTR (plays held notes as a rhythmic pattern), ECHO (feedback repeats, with some presets running indefinitely until you lift the key), plus PAT and DRM. Ten presets each, selected with the numbered keys. A small light tower blinks back at you to confirm what just happened.

PAT and DRM are the programmable pair. You upload your own MIDI to them through Wavy's browser utility — ten banks of fifteen loops each, so 150 per effect — and DRM sends on channel 10 for drum duty. The loop recorder runs a fixed 16 beats and records across MIDI channels, layering up to ten instruments into one idea. Undo works in checkpoints, you can wipe a single channel, and muting channels turns the loop into a rough arrangement. All of it happens on the device, with no screen involved.

It sits somewhere between a travel controller and a pocket sketchpad. Very nice for sofa jams, programming patches away from the desk, or jotting an idea down before it evaporates.
