100 Oscillators?! For real - Jolin’s Avalith is a fully analog drone synth. Eurorack or standalone (Case included). We imagine something beyond the concept of “immense”
So who is this for, you might ask? Anyone who craves a massive wall of sound, drowning in a sea of noise. This is raw, gritty oscillator abundance. You get 100 oscillators that can be tuned to 20 different frequencies (5 oscillators per frequency). The oscillators are organized into 10 banks, with each bank offering the same set of options. This includes an internal patch bay, I/O sockets, dedicated outputs and "performance-oriented buttons for customizable functions". There is also a so-called "starve control" for each bank, as well as on the master.
According to JolinLab, "The 'starve' control regulates the voltage entering the transistors to induce a so-called "negistor state", ehm negative resistance... hmmm, please google :) All this is to say that the Avalinth uses a similar concept to its predecessor, Tabor.
The interface looks like a modernist web of woven patch connections drawn on the front panel. All the small connections on the unit are made with "Dupont cables", while there's also a set of CV inputs for various Eurorack connections.
The Avalith can either be used as a standalone unit or integrated into your existing Eurorack setup. The Hi-Z preamp gives you the option of mixing in guitars and other external audio sources pre- or post-filter. Ah, the filter - perhaps one of the few parts of this device you've actually come across before: a variable state 4-pole lowpass. Always handy to have!
The unit also has a rather flexible power supply, allowing it to be powered via a usb-c connection. This means you can power this little beastly drone machine from a portable power bank. The power supply is also capable of passing power on to other external devices, making it possible to power compatibleEurorack cases for example.
What can we say? Prepare yourself for a carpet of noise, perhaps it's not the easiest task to describe the sound profile. To get a better idea, check out the videos below!
