JMT Synth DNVO-2 — Hand-Built Analogue Noise Box From Japan with Intertwined VCOs, Irregular Modulation and Three-Band Distortion
The DNVO-2 is a desktop noise box from JMT Synth and the follow-up to the DNVO-1. Hand-built in Japan by Tetsuji Masuda, JMT's instruments are known for their unconventional analog designs and a particular fondness for drones, distortion and noise. The DNVO-2 also follows this tradition, with a main oscillator built from two VCOs with different waveforms that interact in complex ways. A WARP switch changes how the two interact, so even small adjustments to the main FREQ control can produce dramatically different results. The idea here is simple controls with complicated results.
Movement comes from several sources. An envelope generator with adjustable level, attack and release sends CV to the main oscillator, triggered either at a regular pace via REPEAT or by three mixed trigger rates in TRIG MIX mode, producing irregular, shifting rhythms. Alongside this are three sub-oscillators, each with its own level and frequency control. Bringing them into the mix naturally changes the thickness, movement and texture of the sound. An additional noise generator feeds into the VCO for some extra roughness and instability when needed.
The output stage adds another layer of sound shaping. HI, MID and LO each work together with a distortion circuit, emphasizing and heavily distorting different frequency ranges. The DNVO-2 is a great box for harsh noise, drones, or as a raw texture source to run through your pedals and effects. Curious to hear how that sounds? Check out the bandcamp link below!
