Fieldtone Box of Uncertainty — Hands-On Granular Sampler for Unpredictable Loops, Rhythms and Textures
The Box of Uncertainty is a desktop granular sampler that turns short recordings into fragmented loops, unusual rhythms and shifting textures. You can record up to three seconds through the built-in microphone or line input by holding the Capture button, with playback starting as soon as you release it. Think of it as the bigger, more controllable relative of Fieldtone's Weaver handheld sampler (also available in Eurorack), with plenty of unpredictability still involved.
Two independent sample players, Particle and Fragment, offer separate controls for length, speed and level. Particle adds pitch and playback direction, while Fragment has its own Space effect. There's also the mysteriously named Occult Emanation effect for further sound manipulation. Everything is controlled directly from the panel, without menus, presets or saving. The name of the device captures it all rather well, of course you can steer the results quite a bit, but there's definitely room for a lot of surprises here as well!
