Wind, Strings, and Everything Between — Inside Erica Synths' 112dB's Steampipe.
Erica Synths and Dutch audio specialists 112dB have created a digital instrument that breathes new life into physical modeling synthesis. The Steampipe uses no conventional oscillators - instead, it models the behavior of wind and string instruments through a sophisticated engine with 32 parameters. It's built around a heavily modified Karplus-Strong algorithm - basically a smart delay line that can recreate how air moves through a pipe or how strings vibrate.
You can make it sound like flutes, clarinets, pipe organs, or even bells and xylophones. But here's where it gets wild - you can push these simulated instruments way beyond reality. Imagine a flute playing notes so low they'd be impossible on a real instrument, or a clarinet with an otherworldly timbre.
It's particularly cool with wind MIDI controllers, though it works great with regular keyboards too. The sound has this organic quality that's hard to get from regular synths, thanks to the physical modeling approach.
The Steampipe excels at creating rich, evolving timbres that feel alive and responsive, making it particularly good for atmospheric sounds and realistic instrument emulations.
