KONSTRUKT-8 is a hands-on journey into the world of electronics, culminating in an analog drum machine! There's a lot to learn here!
Erica Synths and Moritz Klein have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, they want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice they’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.
The instrument consists of eight kits that you solder together yourself, step by step. Each module comes with detailed assembly and explanation instructions, and since every circuit can be prototyped on a breadboard beforehand, you’ll understand every design decision before the final module is built.
KONSTRUKT-8 features four fully analog drum sounds:
- Kick Drum – A resonant bridged T-filter produces deep, punchy bass drums.
- Snare Drum – Filtered transistor noise over a tuned resonator delivers crisp snares.
- Hi-Hat – Six dissonant square-wave oscillators are mixed, filtered, and overdriven—the result is a metallic percussive shine.
- FM Drum – Two interlocking oscillators form a versatile percussion voice: from kicks to toms and bells to cymbal-like sounds.
A four-channel drum sequencer, where you can easily tap out rhythms, provides the groove. All voices feed into a four-channel mixer with separate FX sends per channel and a master insert. Two effects modules round out the system: an analog bucket-brigade delay (BBD) with flanger and delay modes, and a diode-based compressor with a sidechain option.
