Elektron Digitone II — A Classic Reimagined.
The Digitone II represents Elektron's latest iteration of their FM synthesis platform, expanding on the concepts that its predecessor brought, with multiple synthesis engines and enhanced workflow capabilities. The instrument combines traditional FM synthesis with modern sound design approaches, housing four distinct synthesis engines that can work independently or in concert across its 16 tracks.
The technical architecture demonstrates thoughtful evolution in several areas. The original FM engine remains intact but is now complemented by Wavetone, a dual-oscillator synthesizer with wave morphing capabilities + phase distortion, and Swarmer, which specializes in layered, detuned waveforms reminiscent of supersaw structures. The FM Drum engine, while optimized for percussive sounds, proves versatile enough for melodic applications. Each engine benefits from an expanded filter section, including Multi-mode, Comb, and EQ options, providing more extensive timbral control than what you could find on the original Digitone.
The Digitone II distinguishes itself through its sequencing implementation. The 128-step sequencer includes parameter locks, probability triggers, and Euclidean pattern generation. Its polyphonic architecture allows for 16 voices to be distributed across tracks as needed, offering a ton of flexibility. This is a classic reimagined!
